Committee member discusses the importance of a student’s home environment

I’m very excited to join the Children’s Home Society & Trust Foundation’s Marketing Advisory Committee. The committee is made of several members who support the marketing goals of the foundation and Children’s Home Society of Washington.

I have spent the past 10 years working in communications and public relations for rural and urban school districts in eastern and western Washington. I have been able to see firsthand the positive impact that family support organizations like Children’s Home Society of Washington have on our students and their families.

While our schools can regulate the learning environment, we can’t control the home environments or struggles kids may experience in their lives. Imagine how hard it would be to concentrate on a lesson being taught or finish your homework when your life outside that classroom is unstable or in crisis. The services and support offered by Children’s Home Society of Washington help calm storms and give those students the home lives they need to learn and be successful in school.

Schools can’t do it alone. We need strong community partners who help fill the gaps in our students’ lives, and that is exactly what CHSW does. The stronger and more supported kids and schools are, the stronger we are as a school district and community.

I hope to use the experiences and perspective I have gained through my work advocating for children to help tell the stories of our public schools. I look forward to supporting the mission of Children’s Home Society of Washington and the work our committee will focus on to support initiatives and programs.
