Children's Home Society of Washington acts as a confidential intermediary and conducts a search for adoptees and birth parents separated through adoption in Washington state. We offer the following services:
Family Social and Health History Only - Medical background information on the adoptee's birth parents is provided. This does not have any data that would identify the birth parent or child. $125
Full Non-Identifying Family History Report - Medical and background information on the adoptee’s birth parents, including case notes from CHSW's interactions with the mother. This does not have any data that would identify the birth parent or child. $360 *When you receive your non-identifying family history reports, you may see other organizations lists of where CHSW has partnered for services and one can find their histories here: Children's Hospital (formerly named the Children's Orthopedic Hospital)
Search and Reunion - A confidential intermediary searches for and discreetly contacts the birth parent or adopted person. If he/she is no longer living, the intermediary may attempt to locate other members of the birth parent or adopted person's family. Full search $600. Reunion $140.
Record Inspection - For people who are not sure which agency was used for the adoption, we can search our adoption files to learn whether or not CHSW was the placing agency. $50
Updating a Record - We can update a file with current contact information so that it is available if a member of the birth family accesses the file at a future date. $35
Court Order - Fees are for confidential intermediary searches and individuals who obtain an original certified court order specifically naming CHSW as an entity who can release records to the requestor. $150
Consulting Services - These are provided by appointment, which includes up to one hour of a consultants time, during which time a search specialist will work with you researching public records to learn more about your birth family. Computer access is necessary during the appointment. $100. Beyond one hour: $25/15 min.
all fees must be paid before services begin.
Washington state allows all adoptees to obtain original (pre-adoption) birth certificates through the Department of Health. All adoptees 18 and older can get an original birth certificate unless a birth parent files a contact preference form indicating that he or she does not want the information released.
