LGBTQ+ youth support group makes lasting impact beyond graduation

Jana P., like most teens, encountered the typically challenges of being in high school but their journey was layered with complexity in dealing with the subject of gender identity. Looking for an outlet, in 2010 Jana found Triple Point, an LGBTQ+ youth support group developed by Children’s Home Society of Washington which offers a safe space for teens to express and be themselves freely, and their world changed for the better. “I was desperate to find support. In searching online, Triple Point was the best resource I could find for my needs. Triple Point introduced me to the ideas of gender fluidity, pronouns, and community,” Jana recounted. “I was able to meet people like me and have access to knowledgeable educators, guest speakers, food, and other resources – it felt like I had found a home.”

Jana was so inspired by the support received through the group that they based their senior project on the foundational elements of Triple Point to create an after-school club for like-minded youth at their high school. Leaning into the skills and connections made through Triple Point, Jana was able to connect with influential speakers and advocates to help educate classmates on LGBTQ+ culture. It also provided a safe outlet for them to be their unique self, and formulate ways to further educate family, friends, and classmates on the inclusive community Triple Point afforded them in their formidable years.

Jana continued with the Triple Point youth support group throughout high school, graduating in 2013, but the skills learned from the group and the encouraging, inclusive culture left a lasting impression on their life. “There is no price tag you can pay for the support of a community. If you are seeking community, there is one waiting to welcome you through Children’s Home Society of Washington’s Triple Point program with open arms.”
