Children’s Home Society of Washington (CHSW) has added a new community leader and industry expert to our Board of Trustees – Dr. John Mosby, president of Highline College. This brings the total size of the Board of Trustees to 19 members.
“Serving on the Board of Children’s Home Society of Washington will help me to better understand the specific challenges Washingtonians are facing that can be supported through my work at Highline College, and within Children’s Home Society of Washington,” Mosby said. “The missions of Highline College and Children’s Home Society of Washington are in alignment and I believe our collaborative efforts can further the positive impact on tomorrow’s leaders, specifically in the BIPOC community where support is often needed most.”
Dr. John Mosby serves as the 7th President of Highline College. Founded in 1961 as the first community college in the King County area of Washington state, Mosby is the first person of color to hold the position as President and has more than 26 years of higher education experience. His professional history includes rich experiences across a variety of higher educational settings, and his research interests are rooted in the belief of servant leadership, social justice, and equity.
“Adding a leader to our Board of Trustees with a proven track record of long-standing community engagement and dedication to racial equity and social justice underscores CHSW’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of children and families in communities throughout Washington state, with an emphasis on communities of color – often hardest hit by crises afflicting the families we serve,” said Dave Newell, president and CEO of Children’s Home Society of Washington. “We are enthusiastic about deepening our diversity, equity and inclusion work throughout the state with the support of our engaged Board of Trustees and staff.”
CHSW and Highline College have been close partners for the past 13 years. In the late 2000s, CHSW began to manage the operations of the Highline Early Learning Center located on the college’s campus. The Highline Early Learning Center serves 105 children aged six weeks up to five years as well as their families with wraparound support services. Some parents/caregivers of the center’s children are students, faculty, and staff at Highline College. In addition, Highline College has helped advanced the professional development of numerous CHSW’s current and former staff by offering a Bachelor of Applied Science in Teaching and Early Learning as well as other degrees and certificates.
